Why groundbait?

Groundbaiting is literally what it sounds like, 'baiting the ground' to attract fish to an are.

Groundbait can be put into a swim to attract fish. It is very useful for most kinds of coarse fishing, and helps to increase the number of potential catches that hang around looking for a juicy piece of bait. Groundbait can be samples of the hookbait that you are using thrown in loose. Worms, maggots, casters, hemp, and other baits are commonly used. Alternatively large volumes of specially formulated groundbait can be purchased separately, leaving your hookbait to be used on the hook.

It's all in the delivery...

Using the grounbait can be as easy as dropping it into your target location. But often this location can be some way into the middle of a stream, river, lake or sea, and 'dropping' it in won't be feasible. You could swim across and have a miserable day being wet. Never fear, though! Those clever fishing people have done this before, they hate to get wet, and it's now really cheap to go and buy yourself a catapult to assist in a smooth delivery.

Making sure that you delivery to the same location each time ensures that you're not spreading your groundbait too widely, and the fish won't spend too much time chasing around to try and catch it. Once cast you float is the perfect marker for accuracy but the shadow of a bush or tree, or something similar, can be used to ensure the same spot is hit time after time. At least, that's the theory. Make sure your arm is working properly, though (or go out and get that catapult mentioned earlier...).
