Pro Logic Real Musselmeat
Fish love Musselmeat
It really is that simple. In reality they're quite stupid and will eat anything, but as fishermen we know that giving them something that they'll actually enjoy (or at least something they think they're going to enjoy - I doubt very much that carp leap for joy when they get a ruddy great hook stuck through their face). Pro Logic offers a product that gives the fish just what they want: real Scandinavian musselmeat. It's a rare treat for the fish, since mussels are generally so difficult for them to get hold of and get into, so get their tastebuds (or the fish equivalent, at least) watering, and get them nibbling on your hook.
The Pro Logic real musselmeat is pure Scandinavian musselmeat in a salty juice. It is ideal for blending in with other feeds and mixes straight from the tin. No preparation, no messing. The hardest part with fishing with actual mussels (apart from the massive hole in your wallet) is in removing the meat from the clam. The Pro Logic tinned version at least makes acquiring and preparing them a little easier.
Musselmeat really stinks
It makes sense - it's fish, and it's probably about to go off. It's lively and it smells just like it should. Obviously the fish don't care, especially since just after they've eaten it they're going to have that hook through their face (see above), but nonetheless we don't advocate getting it out in front of the wife. Don't crack open a tin of musselmeat, either.
One disadvantage of using tinned musselmeat over the fresh stuff is that it loses the 'milking' action that fresh mussels have when placed in the water. This attracts certain other types of fish to the bait. However, this is a minor point, and we don't think that the benefits of the 'milking' of real mussels in any way makes up for the price and inconvenience involved.
What's it good for?
Well, as with all good baits it's pretty versatile. Carp ace Derek Ritchie supposedly uses it extensively, so it's probably quite popular with Carp. Tench are supposedly attracted to it, too, and it has been suggested that it makes good bait for barbell and chub. Pro Logic's Real Musselmeat is cheap, at £6.99 / 1kg tin, anyway, so it really can't hurt to give it a go a couple of times.
Pure Logic's real mussel meat in the tin can be crushed in the hand or through a riddle. It is great for incorporation in method feeder mixes, boilie mixes, and particle mixes, all directly from the tin.
One suggestion we heard was: Blend a tin of real mussel meat with 1kg of 6mm halibut pellets and some crustacean groundbait. Mash it up well and let it sit for a while. Once it's settled mix in a few spoonfuls of krillpowder and you have a very, very potent stick and bagmix.
Pure logic's real musselmeat has recently been released and it's sure to wow the punters. We like it: we like the idea of it, we like the price of it, but we don't like the smell! Just get it in the water as soon as you can.
